Featured in the August 2008 Sonos Newsletter

Brookside Entertainment Systems was featured in the Sonos August 2008 newsletter. We were asked to detail a client success story, and we thought, why not do two? Read our excerpt from the newsletter below.

Awestruck and thrilled: one client, two Sonos success stories.

Every once in a while, a system we install exceeds our expectations. The latest case in point involved two different but related installations.

In the first, one of our local custom builders asked us to consult with his client about adding speakers to an existing component-based home theater system. The client also had a pair of outdoor speakers on the side of the house, and a pair of bookshelf speakers in the living room - all of them running off a speaker selector switch. We proposed a Sonos ZonePlayer 80 for the home theater, and ZonePlayer 100s for the outdoors, living room, and new kitchen, and suggested he visit our showroom to demo the product. When he did, he was absolutely awestruck by the system's capabilities and purchased it on the spot.

In the second, related scenario, when the house next door to the client's house became available, he purchased it and had it demolished. Then he called us to ask if we could provide a system for the new house that would include a home theater setup, porch speakers, hot tub speakers, pool speakers, pool table area speakers, and exercise room and general outdoor landscape speakers.

But there was a catch: he wanted to be able to run the system for the whole "compound" from his original Sonos. The problem: the two homes were nearly 200 feet apart!

We had no idea if the system would work over that distance with just a piece of cat5e connecting the two homes. And even if it did, we wondered if there would there be any latency issues.

With the help of the builder, we ran 2-inch PVC conduit and hardwired the last ZonePlayer in the main house to the first ZonePlayer in the new pool house. Because there were no ZoneBridges available at the time, we did need to add a ZonePlayer 80 in the far corner of the pool house basement to help with Controller reception out by the grill.

At first, the system seemed a little slow to launch. But once it did, we were thrilled with the performance. Appropriately, the first song I played was "Twistin' by the Pool" by Dire Straits. No doubt about it, the Sonos system makes the entire compound - indoors and out - sound fantastic.
